Josh Barber – IT Apprenticeship Case Study
Computers have always been my passion. For as long as I can remember I've been taking them apart, putting them back together, and working on them in my spare time. An IT apprenticeship was therefore the perfect fit for me.
I first learnt about Gripple through my school's work experience programme. In 2015, I did a week on the shopfloor, got to understand the business and what it's all about. When the opportunity to do an IT apprenticeship came up, it was an easy decision. More than five years on it was the best decision I could have made.
Apprenticeships are about getting hands-on experience, and Gripple is no different. From day one, you're made to feel part of the team, and begin training. This meant I picked things up quickly, giving me the confidence to grow into the role. On a day-to-day basis, I was doing anything from laptop fixes and setups to handling network issues around our manufacturing sites. The variety of tasks makes every day interesting and I’m always learning new skills.
As a global business, we work closely with our colleagues around the world. There aren't many places where, as an apprentice, you can be supporting people in India, America and Sheffield all in the same day. It gives us all a unique experience and gets the best out of the team.
What really sets an apprenticeship at Gripple apart is the trust you're given. The scheme is designed not just to teach you relevant skills for the role, but also to set you up for a long career. Upskilling is a big part of what Gripple do. I've achieved my ITIL 4 foundation since completing my apprenticeship, which has given me plenty of new knowledge about IT best practice to apply at Gripple. I’ve had the opportunity to complete other courses to further my career progression and skillset, all with the support of the team around me.
Since I started at Gripple I’ve not looked back, I think that says a lot. We're a close-knit, tight team and I've learnt a lot here. If anyone is considering an apprenticeship at Gripple – go for it! Nothing can match the real experience you'll get here, nor the training and support on offer. Gripple really is a great place to work, I honestly could not recommend it enough.
